"We mourn the passing in 2008 of Lifetime member Sandi Baker, past President of
Austin-Healey Club USA and lifetime member since 1997, and Austin-Healey, Jensen-Healey and
Sprite enthusiast."
Remembering
Sandi
by Terry
Parsons
Some of
you personally knew Sandi Baker and many knew of her. She was a true Healey enthusiast.
Sandi was President of our Club from 1994 to 1996. She continued leading the way to
where our great organization is today.
I believe
her first healey was a Jensen-Healey which she purchased new in Texas
in the early 70's. The Name of this Healey was 'Tealey'. She and her late husband
Carl Ballay created a Healey corral of almost a dozen cars during the 1990s. This
included Jensen-Healeys, Austin Healeys and Sprites. A few were going to be raced,
but never made it to fruition.
Sandi
and Carl were not only members of Austin Healey Club Pacific Centre and Golden Gate
Austin Healey Club, but also that of the Association of Jensen Owners (AJO now
defunct) and The Jensen Motor Car Club (a local club) of the San Francisco Bay Area.
She was editor of AJO's magazine, The White Lady. She and Carl also held officer
positions of the Jensen Motorcar Club.
Sandi
always named her Healeys with colorful names such as Tealey, Purley, Yellow Peril,
Lapis, Spritely, Geoffrey etc. They were very active members and participated in
many club activities, including tours to Utah,
Colorado, and British
Columbia.
Sadly,
Sandi lost a long hard fought battle with cancer in early September of last year,
the same disease that took her husband Carl in the late '90's. They will always
be remembered as contributing whole heartedly to the Healey Marque.
I'm sure Sandi is looking down on all of us Healey enthusiasts
today and saying "Take your Healeys out and play with them as they like to
be driven."
