The Austin-Healey Sprite was a small open sports car designed by Donald Healey.
Its release was announced by British Motor Corporation (BMC) in 1958. It was a small, low cost sports car designed to fill the hole in the market left by the small pre-war Austin Seven sports cars. The car was designed by the Healey Motor Company within the bounds of their partnership with BMC. It first went on sale at a price of £669.
It used a tuned version of the Austin A-Series engine and as many other components from existing cars as possible to keep the cost to a minimum.
The original Sprite prototype body. This body was finished into a car that was painted Ferrari red according to Gerry Coker. No one knows if the body still exists.
As the Sprite would have looked finished if BMC had stayed with the original Coker design with pop-up headlights and an angled grille.
